Benefits of Chamomile Infusion for soothing Red Eyes: Is it a good option?

During summer, we often expose ourselves to the sun, enjoy swimming in pools and the sea and take precautions to protect our skin. However, we tend to overlook our eyes. Factors like sun exposure, wind, chlorine from pool water, salt from seawater, and air conditioning can cause redness, itchiness, and watering of our eyes. When seeking relief, one remedy that comes to mind is chamomile tea.

Chamomile is known for its antispasmodic and anti-inflammatory properties, which can alleviate pain and discomfort. It’s also effective for treating digestive issues. When applied to the skin, it also can have a soothing effect.

These beneficial properties are attributed to two compounds found in chamomile: chamazulene and alpha-bisabolol. However, it’s important to note that ingesting chamomile is different from applying it to the eyes.

Chamomile to reduce eye itchiness can have a negative effect

Using Chamomile for the eyes can be harmful, as our eyes are sensitive and vulnerable. Applying any substance to the eyes can disturb the eye’s bacterial flora and worsen the situation. Additionally, chamomile is not sterile. Boiling water for preparation may not be sufficient, as the infusion loses its sterility once it cools down. Moreover, the chamomile infusion may contain plant particles that could negatively affect the eye’s flora. For individuals with allergies, it can be harmful because chamomile contains its own pollen.

There is no scientific evidence supporting the effectiveness of this home remedy. Using chamomile tea on the eyes may not only exacerbate the eye condition but also delay the decision to consult a specialist.

These products are sterile, free from irritants and allergens, and specially formulated to prevent stinging or irritation.

Chamomile tea is great for summer but enjoy it as a beverage rather than applying it to your eyes.
